A Tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month: My Immigrant Journey of Building Community

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on a journey that began 35 years ago — when I left my home country Venezuela to start anew in the United States. I arrived in Atlanta with uncertainty and an unshakable belief in the promise of a better future.

Learning a new language, adapting to a different culture, and building a life from the ground up required courage and faith. In that process, I discovered my voice, my purpose, and the strength that comes from embracing both my roots and my new home.

My experience as an immigrant shaped not only who I am but also the mission I now live every day through Los Niños Primero — an organization dedicated to education, empowerment, and belonging. Our work gives children and families the tools to thrive while honoring the culture and values that define us. We see, every day, how education transforms not only individual lives but entire communities, strengthening Atlanta and enriching our shared future.

As we close this month of celebration, we acknowledge the challenging journey for immigrants who work tirelessly to provide stability for their families while carrying the weight of separation, and the constant effort to belong.

I honor all those whose stories echo my own—their courage, resilience, and deep love for family have helped shape and strengthen this nation. Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us that our culture is not only a reflection of our past but also the heartbeat of our contributions, the wisdom that guides our future, and the bridge that unites generations, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.
